Tokyo Pizza, London project interior

Tokyo Pizza

Oversize black herringbone for Tokyo Pizza’s subterranean interior. Ebony Oversize Herringbone from Woodworks by Ted Todd, our sister brand, defines FAB Architects’ atmospheric interior through bold scale and monochromatic colour. FAB Architects approached Ted Todd’s commercial team once the concept was established. Leisure specification consultant Nick Holcroft worked with the practice to define the design and performance requirements of the compact subterranean restaurant. He supported FAB in selecting Ebony Oversize Herringbone from Woodworks, balancing the desired atmosphere with the durability required for a busy hospitality interior.

Project Overview

At the start of 2020 a new Japanese fusion inspired pizza restaurant located underground in the former Bombay Bicycle Club premises opened its doors in Little Venice, London.

This casual underground eatery was the brainchild of two brothers who, having recently returned from a trip to Tokyo, were inspired by the concept of Japanese pizza. Teamed with their love of food, they embarked on a journey to bring that Japanese vibe to the London scene.

To make their unusual concept a reality, they enlisted the professional services of FAB Architects, who were on board from the very start of the project and were instrumental in delivering the concept and construction of Tokyo Pizza’s new premises.

The brief was to create a modern and functional space with lots of atmosphere that fused together both cultures. The small subterranean site added significant practical constraints

How we helped

Once FAB Architects had established the concept, Mike Bell approached Ted Todd’s commercial team. Leisure specification consultant Nick Holcroft worked with FAB to balance the atmosphere they wanted with the performance required in a busy restaurant. He proposed Ebony Oversize Herringbone from Woodworks by Ted Todd, our sister brand specialising in extraordinary British floorcraft.

Featured floor

Ebony Oversize Herringbone has a deep, monochromatic black tone that gives the restaurant a strong visual foundation. Crafted from FSC-certified European oak, each 200 x 600mm block has a 20mm two-ply engineered construction and a substantial 6mm wear layer. Burnished hardwax oil protects the brushed surface for a busy hospitality interior.

Outcome

This bold interior uses the dark Woodworks by Ted Todd herringbone floor to seamlessly bring different areas of the restaurant together and wooden slats and Shou Sugi Ban textured walls deliver a raw but welcoming environment.

Outside, the bamboo screened garden area provides that all-important al fresco dining option. Whilst inside a range of smaller seating zones come alive with Tokyo vibes and nods to contemporary Japanese culture. The look is minimalist and chic, with a sleek black and gold cocktail bar at the heart of the restaurant further contributing to the overall magic of the space.

The tactile interior combines both cultures while leading customers through the restaurant’s distinctive brand identity

Mike said, “We selected one of Ted Todd’s fantastic Woodworks products for our design of Tokyo Pizza in Maida Vale and are delighted with how the dark herringbone floor brings the different areas of the restaurant together. It has a premium feel, looks fantastic and has received wonderful feedback from customers and the client.

Dealing with Ted Todd was a pleasure from start to finish, Nick – one of the leisure specification consultants – was hugely knowledgeable in aiding with the product selection and was quick in turning things around which was much appreciated given the fast-paced nature of the project. We will definitely be keeping Ted Todd in mind for our upcoming projects.”
