Dark wood flooring includes naturally deep toned timber as well as lighter species, such as oak and ash, treated to create darker colour. Fuming and heat treatment can produce rich brown and almost black tones while retaining the grain and character of the wood. The range also includes different textures, finishes and floor formats.

Dark wood flooring covers a spectrum of deep brown, smoked and charcoal tones. Black wood flooring sits at the deepest end of the colour range and creates a more defined contrast with surrounding surfaces. Compare samples in your space, as natural and artificial light can change how each tone appears.

The majority of Ted Todd floors are suitable for use over underfloor heating. Most of our engineered constructions are built to perform well as temperatures change, so underfloor heating is compatible with a large part of the range. That said, suitability can vary by individual floor, so it is always worth checking before you buy or install. The best way to confirm is to check the specification sheet for your chosen floor, which will state whether it has been tested and approved for use over underfloor heating. Satin and higher sheen finishes can emphasise the depth and variation within dark timber. Matt finishes give dark and black floors a quieter, more contemporary appearance. Texture matters too. A brushed surface brings greater definition to the grain, while a smoother texture creates a cleaner and more uniform expression.

Care requirements depend on the finish. Ted Todd recommends checking the floor’s specification sheet and using the stated care system. Care System 1 is generally used for lacquered floors, while Care System 2 is intended for floors with an oil based finish. Use the correct products regularly and follow the maintenance instructions supplied.
