George Clarke’s Old House, New Home reveals a Victorian kitchen with Stonewash Chevron The former television room at Linden House was reworked as a spacious kitchen-diner and utility area for the family. Almost-black Stonewash Chevron runs beneath muted pink cabinetry and blue-grey walls. During the programme, George Clarke highlighted how the dark floor made the surrounding colours stand out. Having previously worked with the Old House, New Home team, Ted Todd’s Commercial Residential Specialist Christian was approached to support the floor specification. Budget constraints required the client to reconsider their initial choice, so Christian arranged a consultation at our Cheshire Design Centre. After comparing alternative floors at scale, the team selected Stonewash Chevron from the Create® collection.

George Clarke’s TV Series Old House, New Home sees the architect visit period homes throughout Britain with varying architectural styles. The programme aims to unlock potential by solving design dilemmas and helping home homeowners design a stunning house suitable for the demands of modern life.
Having worked with the ‘Old House, New Home’ team before, Christian, a member of our commercial residential team was approached to specify a floor for a grand Victoria Villa in Lancashire.
Project Overview
The brief was to renovate a large space on the ground floor of this stunning Victorian Villa into a very modern kitchen-diner and utility area.
The existing kitchen in the property was situated in the smallest room and didn’t allow for the open-plan, sociable space that the family dreamt of. It was also situated, in part, in a single skin outbuilding that was very cold in winter and was isolated from the rest of the house. The huge ‘TV room’ at the back of the house was the perfect choice for their new kitchen-diner.
How we helped
Our client already had a strong idea about which floor they wanted to specify to fit with the design of the scheme, however, budget constraints meant they had to consider other options.
To aid with the decision making, Christian suggested the team visit our Cheshire Design Centre and arranged for them to come into the showroom to look at other flooring options.
It was during this consultation they settled on Stonewash Chevron, from the Ted Todd Create® collection.
Made from Nature grade European oak these 15mm engineered hardwood blocks offer superior stability. Finished in a hardened oil, the floor is splash resistant making it easy to clean and maintain – perfect for a family kitchen.
Outcome
The aesthetic properties of Stonewash contribute to the overall grandeur of the final scheme. The darkest floor in the collection, Stonewash is almost black with a cool, smoky tone which compliments the other design choices perfectly. Plus, the blocks have been lightly brushed to enhance the natural grain detail of the oak, which when used throughout such a large space creates interest and subtle variations wherever you look.
The client chose to use a Ted Todd floor because of the quality look and feel of the floor.
Now the heart of any family home, this large space is grand yet homely. Traditional units painted on-site in a muted pink colour contrast elegantly with the grey/blue walls.
The ground floor of Linden House has successfully transformed an outdated period house into a modern family home and seamlessly blends the old with the new.
During the programme, George told the couple: “I love all the choice of colours. I love the dark floor, which makes all the colours pop out even more.”

Stonewash up close
Stonewash is the darkest floor in the Create® collection, with an almost-black colour and cool, smoky undertones. The 15mm engineered chevron blocks are made from nature-grade European oak and lightly brushed to accentuate the grain. A hardened-oil finish provides wear and splash resistance for straightforward maintenance in a family kitchen.
