The bespoke floors of RIBA Stirling Prize-winning Astley Castle Witherford Watson Mann adapted the moated 17th-century castle as contemporary accommodation, retaining its ancient walls and significant historic features. Woodworks by Ted Todd made a series of bespoke floors for The Landmark Trust’s conservation-led restoration, which received the 2013 RIBA Stirling Prize. Working closely with The Landmark Trust and Witherford Watson Mann, the Woodworks team developed bespoke floor specifications for different areas of the castle. Each floor was made to sit sensitively within the surviving fabric and support the architectural character of the restored accommodation.

Working with The Landmark Trust and architects Witherford Watson Mann, our sister brand Woodworks by Ted Todd was commissioned to make bespoke wood flooring for historic Astley Castle.
Dating back to the 17th century, the moated castle was carefully transformed into modern accommodation within the original ancient walls. The restoration retained significant historic fabric and introduced contemporary accommodation within the surviving castle walls.
The Woodworks team crafted a series of bespoke floors in response to The Landmark Trust’s conservation-led restoration. The commission gave the Woodworks makers an opportunity to contribute their craftsmanship to this exceptional architectural project.
The completed restoration received the 2013 RIBA Stirling Prize, one of the UK’s most prestigious architectural awards.

The bespoke process
Each specification was made specifically for Astley Castle, with decisions shaped by the individual spaces, surviving historic fabric and conservation requirements. This project-specific approach allowed the floors to become a considered part of the wider architectural restoration.
