Private Residence
Reclaimed timber throughout a contemporary Cheshire barn. Northbank Pitch Pine Plank and Claremont from Woodworks, our sister brand, connect the home’s rural setting with its clean, modern interior. The use of reclaimed timber, ceiling cladding and a bespoke architectural detail called for Woodworks, our sister brand specialising in extraordinary British floorcraft. Its makers transformed pitch pine beams reclaimed from Garston Dock into wide-plank engineered flooring, supplied Claremont oak cladding for the ceilings and handcrafted an orange-red sliding door for the principal bedroom.

This modern barn conversion with expansive views of the scenic North English countryside combines traditional exposed beams with modern design features for a sophisticated and truly ‘English’ feel. This look has been ever-present in British design and continues to gather pace as a design choice across the United States, Canada and beyond.

The use of reclaimed timber and bespoke architectural details called for Woodworks by Ted Todd, our sister brand specialising in extraordinary British floorcraft. Northbank Pitch Pine Plank from the Woodworks Antique collection was specified throughout the home, creating continuity between its generous living spaces.
These wide, long planks were reclaimed from a warehouse on the banks of the River Mersey where they were being used as beams.
We brought the beams back to the Woodworks restoration centre, where artisans transformed them into a wide plank engineered floor that pairs historic reclaimed wood with modern construction technology. The boards were brushed and finished with Naked Skin Lacquer to ensure there was no color change to the pale, elevated grain.

This floor has been in place for several years now and the patina is only growing richer and richer as it is walked upon by the family throughout its lifecycle. The wood will continue to mature, which is the beauty of a wooden floor, adding grace and poise as it ages.
Claremont, from Woodworks’ Bold Surfaces portfolio, was used on the ceilings of the property.
Using this reclaimed cladding, with its delightful light and natural tones, adds much-wanted soul and feeling to the roof areas, bringing a new dimension to the hallway, landing and office spaces.
Painted and then worn down by hand to show its unique saw marks, it gives a minimalistic, modern aesthetic that complements the pale grey walls.
For this property Woodworks artisans also handcrafted a bespoke sliding door. Painted a bright orange-red, it is a modern and eye catching entrance to the master bedroom which juxtaposes the more natural tones within the rest of the home, being a bespoke statement piece.
Reclaimed timber across the floor and ceilings gives the home a strong connection to nature and the past, supported by the durability and stability required for modern family living.
Northbank Pine up close
Reclaimed from pitch pine beams at Garston Dock, Northbank retains the generous proportions and character of its former life. Brushing reveals the elevated grain, while Naked Skin Lacquer preserves its pale natural tone.
