Solid Wood Flooring

The biggest advantage of solid wood flooring is its depth of timber. Because each board is one solid piece of hardwood, the floor can be sanded back and refinished time after time, returning it to its original appearance and allowing it to last a lifetime. This works in the same way as the wear layer on an engineered floor, only much thicker: some of our reclaimed solid woods are 20mm thick. Solid boards are also lighter than thick engineered boards, which opens up where they can be used. Walls, ceilings and floors can all be covered in solid wood, adding character and texture to every surface of a room. That versatility, combined with the depth and variety of grain in a single piece of timber, is why solid wood remains such a desirable choice for both homes and commercial spaces.

Solid wood flooring should only ever be installed by a professional installer. Solid boards respond to their environment more than engineered boards do, so correct preparation matters: the subfloor must be dry and level, the timber needs time to acclimatise in the room before fitting, and an appropriate expansion gap must be allowed around the edges of the floor. Solid woods can be installed on walls, floors and even ceilings, but we do not recommend them for use over underfloor heating, as the heat can cause the timber to move and distort.
