Harbour Beach Club
Inside Harbour Beach Club: Champagney herringbone for all-day dining DO Design Studio selected aged French oak to complement the restaurant’s earthy palette and natural textures. The floor’s finish was changed to Oilwood Traffic Matt to support frequent service, cleaning and footfall. DO Design Studio commissioned Woodworks by Ted Todd to supply the restaurant floor, working with business development specialist Anola. Woodworks is our sister brand, specialising in extraordinary modern and historic wood floors, handmade panels and bespoke architectural details, developed and made in its Cheshire workshops. Anola recommended Champagney herringbone and adapted its finish for the practical requirements of the hotel’s all-day restaurant.

Project Overview
Opened in August 2021, Harbour Beach Club Hotel is a stylish waterfront hotel and resort on the beach of Salcombe.
Nestled in an area of outstanding natural beauty, every element of Harbour Beach Club and Hotel is inspired by its surroundings.
Featuring 50 rooms and suites decorated in earthy palettes, floor-to-ceiling windows frame the coastline and fill the laid-back restaurant with natural light. A luxury space and a fabulous beach bar allows guests to kick back and enjoy the beautiful views.
Project Requirements
The restaurant is used as an all-day dining restaurant so required a durable floor that could withstand a high footfall environment, yet also be aesthetically pleasing.
The design needed to create a relaxed atmosphere for families and friends to wind down and relax so requested the use of earthy tones mixed with natural textures.

Champagney herringbone was selected for its warm colouring and aged texture, with the standard burnished hardwax-oil finish changed to Oilwood Traffic Matt for the demands of all-day dining.
Why the floor was chosen
Within the early stages of the project, a couple of the Woodworks ranges were being reviewed by Do Design and the end client. From the very start, it was clear that Champagney was the firm favourite. Its rich warm tones and rustic appearance would be accentuated by the restaurant’s immense windows that lead the way for the sunlight.
The standard finish applied to Champagney is burnished hardwax oil, so Anola suggested to her client that for a busy hotel environment a more hard-wearing finish would improve the durability of the floor, and so the finish was updated to Oil Wood Traffic Matt.
Sourced from the Quercy region of France, our Champagney crafting process allows the natural shapes and movement within the wood to bloom. Throughout a 24-month seasoning process, our artisans draw out these natural textures to wonderful effect. This technique matched with the traditional herringbone pattern makes use of the bright sunlight that enters the space through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Outcome
Throughout the design scheme, the colour palette runs through earthy tones to give the desired natural feeling. By mixing soft sienna tones with subtle flairs of green and blue, and natural products like the wood floor, the hotel and restaurant showcase the scenery of Salcombe and create the perfect year-round dining spot.
Speaking to Premier Hospitality Magazine, Sarah Daniels from Do Design Studio said: “The location did have a lot of influence on our design. Many harbour hotels are coastal but we wanted to not only bring in inspiration from the coast but also from the surrounding valley in using fresh and earthy palettes. Two schemes are running throughout the guest bedrooms, one is earthy and sienna tones and the other is more vibrant with greens and blues; the restaurant, bar and terraces combine both palettes.”

Champagney up close
Champagney is a rustic-grade aged French oak floor with warm, dark-brown colouring. A 24-month seasoning process develops its natural movement, while skip-sawn detail, scrubbed knots and soft-rolled edges produce an undulating texture. The 100 × 500mm herringbone blocks are 20mm thick with a 6mm nominal wear layer and a 2-ply engineered construction. Champagney is normally finished with matt burnished hardwax oil; an Oilwood Traffic Matt finish was specified for Harbour Beach Club.
