Issho

The carbonised timber behind Issho Leeds’ Kori Bar DesignLSM combined traditional oak, porphyry stone, marble and blackened timber across Issho’s restaurant and rooftop bar. The timber's deep black surface and silvery grain frame the Kori Bar beneath its monochrome ceiling artwork. Woodworks by Ted Todd was commissioned by DesignLSM to supply carbonised timber for the Kori Bar. Woodworks is our sister brand, specialising in extraordinary modern and historic wood floors, handmade panels and bespoke architectural details, developed and made in its Cheshire workshops.

Issho, which translates as “together” in Japanese, is a contemporary dining destination in Victoria Gate, Leeds.

Working closely with D&D London, DesignLSM developed the 7,800 sq ft venue around an elegant interpretation of East Asian materials and textures. The space includes a restaurant with an open sushi counter, a rooftop bar and an outdoor terrace.

Alongside the terrace sits the Kori Bar, framed in blackened timber and illuminated by monochrome ceiling artwork. Bespoke banquette seating creates areas of privacy, while counter seating offers a more social view of the restaurant.

DesignLSM selected a focused material palette of traditional oak, natural-edge porphyry stone, marble tiles and charred timber.

The featured surface in this project is a legacy surface from the Woodworks Carbonised portfolio. A Japanese charring technique - Yakisugi - gave the timber its deep black finish and silvery tones, which become more visible as the light moves across its distinctive grain. A similar appearance can now be achieved by specifying Augite.

Augite up close

While the timber specified in this product is a legacy surface from Woodworks' Carbonised collection, Augite is a similar surface. Augite is made from solid reclaimed oak, charred using the ancient Japanese technique of Yakisugi. Each plank is heavily brushed by hand, revealing a deeply textured grain beneath its black and silvered colouring. The random-width planks measure 100–150mm wide and 10mm thick, with hand-rolled edges and an Oilwood Traffic Super Matt finish. Augite can be used across floors, walls and ceilings.
