What does the thickness of engineered wood flooring mean?
When talking about engineered flooring thickness, it is important to distinguish between the overall thickness of the board and the thickness of the hardwood wear layer.
A 20mm engineered floor is not simply a thicker version of a 15mm floor. The construction beneath the hardwood surface can have a different type of construction, which can add extra stability and durability.
The wear layer is the section of genuine hardwood above the engineered core. This is particularly relevant when considering the floor's long-term performance and whether it can be sanded back numerous times. For 20mm floors this top layer is thicker, up to 6mm, while our 15mm floors have a 3.5mm or 4mm hardwood wear layer.

A 15mm engineered floor can be a useful choice where overall floor height needs to be considered. It can work well in renovations where existing thresholds, doors and adjoining floor levels need to be carefully coordinated.
For projects involving underfloor heating, the complete floor construction and installation method should always be assessed rather than choosing a board based on thickness alone.
20mm engineered wood flooring
A 20mm engineered floor provides a more substantial board construction and can be particularly suited to projects where a deeper floor build-up is appropriate.
The additional construction depth can also be useful when specifying architectural details or when the floor needs to integrate with other elements of the building.
The most suitable option will depend on the individual project, including the subfloor, installation method, floor levels and heating system.
Does a thicker engineered wood floor mean it is more durable?
Durability depends on several factors, including the timber species, grade, construction, hardwood wear layer, finish, installation and how the floor is maintained.
The overall thickness of the board should therefore not be used as a simple measure of quality or longevity. A well-constructed engineered floor with an appropriate wear layer and finish can provide excellent long-term performance without simply being the thickest option available.

Do I Need A Sub Floor For 15mm & 20mm Wood Floors?
20mm floors can be used as sub-floors – they are strong enough to be laid directly onto joists that are up to 400mm apart (from centre to centre). 15mm engineered floors need to be laid onto a sub-floor. Make sure you factor this into your overall costs.
Is engineered wood flooring suitable for underfloor heating?
Engineered wood flooring can be suitable for underfloor heating, but compatibility depends on the flooring construction, heating system and installation method.
Timber naturally responds to changes in temperature and humidity. While all our engineered floors are recommended for use with underfloor heating the thickness of the board does affect heat retention. 15mm planks heat up quicker but don’t hold the heat as long as 20mm boards.
At Ted Todd, our guidance recommends that the surface temperature of a timber floor should not exceed 27°C when used with underfloor heating.
