Spotlight: Sustainable Home Renovation

Creating a more sustainable home is about looking beyond individual products and considering how materials, craftsmanship and design choices work together. We recently spoke with Ashleigh Rowe, the talented owner behind this stunning transformation and got an insight into why Standen herringbone was the best choice for her home.

From the building materials to the flooring, every element was selected with longevity, natural materials and responsible design in mind.

What type of property do you call home?

We live in a 1930s semi-detached home in Cornwall, which is still very much a work in progress as we continue to renovate. We’re also restoring some of the original features, helping to retain the character and feel of the house while making it work for modern living.

Which Ted Todd floor did you choose?

We wanted the space to feel as though it had always been part of the house, complementing the original architecture rather than looking like a new addition.

I’m naturally drawn to raw, rustic materials, so Crafted Textures felt like the right choice. Standen Herringbone has an authentic, characterful appearance, with natural knots and variation meaning no two blocks look quite the same. It has plenty of character without overpowering the space.

The golden tones work beautifully with our pink and black Shaker kitchen, while bringing warmth and texture to the room.

What factors played a part when choosing the floor?

We had already chosen the colour and style of our kitchen, so this naturally influenced our flooring choice. With bold cabinetry, we wanted something that would complement the scheme without competing with it.

As the kitchen is one of the most well-used rooms in our home, durability was also important. With two young children and a very large dog, we needed a floor that could handle plenty of footfall and everyday family life without showing every mark.

With the right Ted Todd Floor Care System, the floor is also straightforward to maintain. Standen Herringbone has worked brilliantly for us and, even after a year of family life, is still standing up to everything we throw at it.

How would you describe your interior style?

I always find this a difficult question to answer, as I’m still figuring it out myself! We’re working hard to restore as many of the original features in our period home as possible, so I’d describe my style as traditional with a modern twist.

I’m a big fan of black interiors, whether that’s through woodwork, paint or a statement piece of furniture. I’d also say I lean towards maximalism, particularly in our kitchen, with leopard-print stools and bold, patterned wallpaper throughout the rest of the house.
