TED TODD FLOORING
American Black Walnut
What is American Black Walnut wood flooring?
Our American Black Walnut flooring can be found in a range of collections, designed with many a purpose in mind.
Most of these feature deep rich brown colours, such as Rivington, from our Crafted Textures collection. This nature grade floor features golden dark colours dashing across the boards and a tight grain, meaning it is a perfect choice for any interior needing to add some valuable character.
Don’t be fooled by the name however, as not all Black Walnut flooring is black in colour. Dovecote, from Woodworks by Ted Todd Editions, plays host to a range of grey colours, delicately expressing the natural impurities within the timber, in a cool, relaxing tone.
These floors aren’t just a pretty face though – they are engineered with a 15-20mm construction and a 4-6mm wear layer, so you don’t need to worry about damaging the natural appearance, as long as you give these boards and blocks a little love over the years.
Characteristics of American Black Walnut flooring
You won’t be surprised to know that this timber is not one grown close to our Cheshire headquarters, with its origin being in the United States.
It is here, in the Northern and Eastern regions, where this species is grown and harvested, experiencing bright American sunshine, and harsh winters that the North of the country is known for. All this natural weathering contributes to the texture and grain differences in the wood – with a natural product, no two boards will ever be the same, and that’s something we just love about working with wood.
By polishing by hand, the timber can reach an exceedingly smooth finish, creating on that is perfect to run your fingers against. It develops a lustrous patina that is prized by devoted woodworks for its intense strength, interesting grain and unique colour. From creamy whites in the sapwood, to rich dark chocolates in the heartwood, American black wood flooring has something for every occasion.
What are the benefits of American Black Walnut flooring?
In terms of characteristics (natural beauty, excellent grain patterns and unique tone) there really isn’t much that compares to American Black Walnut wood flooring. Standing in a class of its own, no manmade alternatives can capture the look, the feel and most important the charm that this timber grants to every project.
To keep the beauty shining, you can sand down and seal the wood without staining, restoring the floor to its former glory time and time again throughout the lifetime of your project.
It’s not just beauty that is in the eye of the beholder here however, as American walnut engineered floors have outstanding strength properties, packing dimensional stability and shock resistance, making it a very strong choice in areas such as bars, restaurants and workspaces, as well as in rooms of the home.
This durability makes the timber suitable for various applications. Walls, floors and ceiling all benefit from an injection of this wood, which is suitable for underfloor heating too.
We have been supplying American Black Walnut engineered wood flooring for over 25 years and it remains as popular as ever, its appeal unquestionably timeless.

The best rooms for American Black Walnut wood flooring?
Given that this species of wood is so versatile in both application and beauty, it can be more of a challenge to find a room or project that American Black Walnut isn’t suitable for.
Walls, floors and ceilings all benefit from the immense amounts of character the dark natural tones offer, creating an ambient feeling to spaces such as living rooms, libraries and hotel areas. Whether you are looking for warmth from the deeper brownish floors, or some cooler grey colours, this species has a floor for your application.
In fact the only spaces we would suggest avoiding using American Black Walnut wood is in spaces where there is high risk of heavy water spillage, such as bathrooms. In kitchen however, where the spillage will be more minimal, these floors will be unphased.
